Traction behavior between a stationary disk loaded against a rotating disk has been investigated using two mineral lubricants exhibiting markedly different viscosity characteristics. A theoretical model is developed and compared with experimental results obtained in a twin disk machine in which the importance of lubricant properties is evaluated. The base viscosity and temperature coefficient of viscosity are seen to be important control parameters in this type of operation.
