Optimum Design of Metallic Reciprocating Seals

A new concept for a reciprocating metallic seal which does not involve elastohydrodynamic effects is analyzed. Eccentricity is taken into account and optimization is performed to give maximum sealing capacity and low friction loss. Performance characteristics are presented and comparison is made between the optimum seal and conventional pumping rings. The comparison shows the advantage of using the new seal concept from the point of view of its high sealing capacity and low friction loss.
